Let's begin with Super Mario Sunshine with its colorful, bright, and eye-catching colors, is the dominant element that draws your eyes in. The protagonist, Mario, is dressed in a beautiful vibrant bright red shirt and brilliant bright blue overalls. Surrounding him are many colors like yellow, blues, and whites and a little green. I like the font they used for the Super Mario sunshine it's like a bubble writing with a few straight edges here and there, instead of the soft curved lines normally found on bubble lettering. The game takes place on the tropical Isle Delfino, where Mario, Toadsworth, Princess Peach, and five Toads are taking a vacation. A villain resembling Mario, known as Shadow Mario, vandalizes the island with graffiti and leaves Mario to be wrongfully convicted for the mess. The actual gameplay utilizes color to appeal to the players.

Freedom Force
Developer: Irrational Games
Release Date: March 26, 2002
Location: Boston, Massachusetts
-   Freedom Force, is when a player guides a team of superheroes as they defend Patriot City from a variety of villains, monsters, and other menaces. The use of color is amazing the way they make the yellow and orange in the back almost look like flames. Each character has their own unique costume and bright colors but having Energy X lead the pack, you know that's the main character and the leader. The shadowing that is done for the characters is also well placed. Most of the game is set in Patriot City, but there are a lot of other locations, parks and different places shown throughout the game. These also include magical realms, prehistoric times, and realms entirely removed from time and space.

All of these games were made by very smart people that went out there to learn the technology enough to teach it to us. Now everyone watches movies from home, listens to music and share their images from their phones.

Comments

  1. I grew up playing Super Mario Sunshine on my dads Game Cube. I loved the bright vibrant colors used throughout the game. The music never stood out to me but in a good way. It was just there as background music and it did that very well. This was my first open world game that I remember and has had a big impact on me and what I enjoy playing today.

  2. Hi Tamera,

I do not know if you have personally played Okami, but I grew up with it and personally believe that this game is literally a piece of art! The developers captured the technique historic Japanese artists use so expertly, and having the gameplay centered around the player using this technique to paint puzzle solutions was awesome. It takes a little bit of practice to master creating these strokes using the analog sticks, but it is worth the effort; on top of the unique artstyle and playstyle, the entire plot is based on ancient Japanese mythology. The beautiful white wolf you play as is named Amaterasu, who is the Japanese Goddess of the Sun and Universe, and the wolf is in fact an incarnation of this god. You fight against the mythological serpent, Orochi, who was defeated in the actual myth by Amaterasu's brother, however I think the game's interpretation of the mythos is just as cool as the original story. All in all, its a great form a media and perfect representation of art!

  3. I remember always playing Mario when I was younger. I still enjoy playing Mario games. Video games were a huge hit in the 1980’s. Mario was a bright character. For your second game cover I agree that it is a totally different mood just by looking at the cover. The cover is the main statement being advertised. You can tell what the game is like by the front cover. Call of Duty is a popular game that I have also played. The clothing has great color and graphics that make it very war-like. I have never seen Japan video games. A lot of bright colors are used for Freedom Force. I feel that many video game covers use bright colors to attract customers or young kids.
